5 week short course
Thursday evenings, 6.30 - 8pm
6th, 13th, 20th, 27th March, 3rd April
£12 for a single lesson
Our Art Basics sessions are tailored to those who have not picked up a pencil in years, individuals who wish to reignite their creativity and those who would like a refresher. The classes begin with a short presentation before a structured activity takes place using specific materials.
This half term we will solely focus on drawing methodologies and you will be shown how to successfully use a range of drawing media. By taking part on this course, you will improve your observational drawing skills, you will gain a better understanding of how to use a range of media and you will have participated in a variety of mindful activities.
All materials, refreshments and car parking is provided, so all you need to bring is yourself!
Session One / 6th March: How to use shading pencils
During our first class together, you will develop your use of line and tone by implementing shading techniques with pencils. We will talk about the best pencils to use for different projects, and the difference between the grades. This lesson will focus on depicting reflective surfacses, and by the end of your evening in the studio, you will have sketched out and shaded an accurate drawing of a metallic object onto cartridge paper.
Session Two / 13th March: How to use biros, markers and fineliners
During this class you will explore a range of mark-making techniques and consider how to effectively use line and tone in your sketches. You will produce a careful observational drawing of a still life composition using a variety of black pens, and you will learn techniques that you can easily carry on using at home.
Session Three / 20th March: How to use chalk and charcoal
Our third session will continue to focus on your observational drawing skills, but this time we will practice using charcoal, white chalks and paper smudgers. You will make artwork focusing on food and drink, learning how to create areas of texture as well as the shadows, highlights and midtones that can be seen across a variety of edible objects.
Session Four / 27th March: How to use watercolour pencils
Our fourth session will celebrate colour! We will talk about basic colour theory and then you will learn how to blend watercolour pencils effectively. Our theme will be a quirky one, and you will take home a bright and bold study that shows how you have improved your observational skills alongside your application of watercolour pencils to paper.
Session Five / 3rd April: How to use pastels
Our final session will continue to build on your understanding of colour combinations and tonal variation. You will be shown the differences between oil pastels and soft pastels, before you create your final drawing of the course. The theme for the evening will be fashion and textiles, and by the end of the session you will have produced a vibrant picture on black card.
