ART BASICS: PAINTING

5 week short course

Thursday evenings, 6.30 - 8pm

16th, 23rd, 30th January, 6th, 13th February

£12 for a single lesson

Our Art Basics sessions are tailored to those who have not picked up a paint brush in years, individuals who wish to reignite their creativity and those who would like a refresher. The classes begin with a short presentation before a structured activity takes place using specific materials.

This half term we will solely focus on painting methodologies and you will be shown how to successfully use a range of wet media. By taking part on this course, you will improve your knowledge of painting techniques and you will develop your understanding of how to apply watercolours, gouache, inks, acrylics and mixed-media to paper and board.

All materials, refreshments and car parking is provided, so all you need to bring is yourself!

Session one / 16th January: Watercolour seascapes

During this class you will be introduced to a range of watercolour methods, producing a mini-menu of techniques to take home. You will also have the opportunity to put these ideas into practice and you will create a small study of a dramatic coastal scene.

Session two / 23rd January: Gouache nighttime cityscapes

During this lesson you will be introduced to a range of gouache paint applications. You will have the opportunity to make a number of little sample pieces where you will be able to practice using gouache, before moving on to creating an atmospheric artwork that depicts a townscape at sunset.

Session three / 30th January: Pen and ink architectural studies

This class will focus on the application of bold marks and lines onto paper that depict an architectural element such as an interesting doorway or a beautiful window. You will then be able to add striking and bold colours using lovely drawing inks with a brush. This is a great project if you are looking to build up your confidence in painting and drawing urban scenes.

Session four / 6th February: Early spring flowers in acrylic paints

This class will positively look towards the spring, and we will observe a range of primroses, snowdrops and hellebore flowers. We will focus on acrylic paint application using brushes and all manner of different art tools. You will create a small menu of techniques that you can later refer to, and we will build up to the creation of a painting of british flowers and fauna.

Session five / 13th February: Free style!

During this class you can either choose to continue with your acrylic painting from the previous session, revisit a different material, or you can take part in an additional mixed-media project.
